1933 Chicago
1958 begins his studies at the Art Institute Chicago with Callahan and Siskind
1961 his thesis The Search for Form: Photographical Experiments with the Human Figure
1963 started to teach at State University College in Buffalo, New York.
1969 returned to Chicago as a teacher at the Art Institute
1971 – 2000 Professor at Southern Illinois University
Since his student days, Swedlund had experimented obsessively, with film, lenses, paper stock, exposures and chemical processes
his works are part of e.a. the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, the Getty, Los Angeles, and the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art, Japan
