BIOGRAPHY / EXHIBITONS

  • 1944 Born in Anshan, Manchuria, China.
  • 1965 Dropped out of the Nihon University College of Art. “Teiko (Resistance)” was published privately by Mirai-sha.
  • 1966 Went to Kobe, where he had spent his teenage years, and photographed the harbour laborers.
  • 1968 Photographed the student movement at Nihon University, from within the barricades; his photographs of the students' lives were regularly contributed to the Asahi Graphic Magazine.
  • 1970 Founded the Nora-sha, a publishing house, with Hirachi Isao, Hashimoto Shoko, Wada Hisashi, and Okada Akihiko; Kitai became the head of the company.
  • 1971 “Sanrizuka” was published by Nora-sha.
  • 1972 “Sanrizuka” received the newcomer prize of the Photographic Society of Japan.
  • 1973 Traveled to China with a group of eleven photographers, including Kimura Ihee.
  • 1974 “Mura-e (To the villages)” was published in Asahi Camera.
  • 1976 “Mura-e” received the first Kimura Ihee Photography Award.
  • 1976 Special issue in October of Asahi Camera “Mura-e” was published.
  • 1979 “The People of Sakaigawa”, was published by Urayashu-machi. 1980 The series of Osaka photographs, “The Tsutenkaku Neighborhood”, were contributed to the Nippon Camera. “Mura-e” was published by Tanko-sha.
  • 1981 “New World Story” was published by Chosei-sha.
  • 1987 The exhibition of “Funabashi Story” was held at Funabashi City Hall.
  • 1989 “Funabashi Story” was published by Rokko Shuppan.
  • 1990 “Somehow Familiar Places” was published by Sokyu-sha.
  • 1994 “One Fine Day” was published by Takarajima-sha.
  • 2004 “1990s Beijing” was published by Tosei-sha.
  • 2005 The series “Walking with Leica” began the contribution to Nippon Camera until 2013.
  • 2012 “Sanrizuka” was reprinted as one of “Protest Box” edited by Martin Parr published by Steidl Verlag.
  • 2012 The exhibition of “Barricade” was held at Harper’s Books Gallery, East Hampton.
  • 2012 “Barricade” was published by Harpers Books.
  • 2012 The exhibition of “Somehow Familiar Places”, one-man exhibition, was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
  • 2012 The exhibition of “Agitators” was held at Zen Photo Gallery. “Agitators” was published by Zen Photo Gallery.
  • 2012 The exhibition of “Harbor Laborers in Kobe” was held at Gallery Tosei.
  • 2014 The exhibition of “Somehow Familiar Places” in color was held at Canon Gallery S.
  • 2014 The exhibition of “Mura-e” was held at Zeit Photo Salon.
